Established in 2010, Rosa de la Cruz jewelry signifies beauty, quality, and importantly, joy.
Co-founded by Rosa de la Cruz and former fashion director, Tierney Horne, the London-based label draws inspiration from a number of sources, whether it be vintage jewelry or artwork, after all, Rosa is the daughter of art collectors, and the founders of the contemporary art museum, de la Cruz Collection in Miami’s Design District.
The result? Instantly recognisable jewelry pieces that hit that sweet spot between classic and contemporary, fun and future heirlooms. And they have a universal, cross-generation appeal too, with wearers including Kate Moss, and Katy Perry through to Leonardo DiCaprio, to name a few.
Rosa discusses style, her brand, and producing jewelry pieces that evoke happiness.
Felicity Carter: What is your first memory of style?
Rosa De La Cruz: Both my business partner Tierney and I love and collect vintage jewellery. I have always been inspired by my Cuban grandmothers’ 1950s jewellery. At my parents’ museum in Miami, the de la Cruz Collection, you can see a Salvador Dali portrait of my grandmother Lolo wearing a pair of equally surrealist Van Cleef pearl and diamond earrings which are now mine.
FC: How did you get into the jewelry industry?
RDLC: I studied business at Wharton and law at Columbia University and then worked in the legal department of the Guggenheim and at the law firm Skadden Arps. Whereas Tierney was the fashion director at Harpers and Elle and worked in the fashion industry. Despite my professional background, I was always interested in art and design and involved in creative projects including interiors, illustration and fashion. After discovering a jewellery workshop in Milan to produce pieces for myself, I decided to launch this as a business having had numerous requests and incredible press support. Then twelve years ago, Tierney and I went into partnership. We both had complimentary backgrounds and working and creating together is fun and dynamic- like our jewellery!
FC: How would you sum up the aesthetic of Rosa De La Cruz?
RDLC: When designing jewellery, I am inspired by the same visual and tactile appeal that I find in my appreciation of all the elements in my daily life- including art, design and fashion. I am a collector at heart, but adhere to the maxim “less is more”- limit your surroundings to belongings that give you joy and beauty. My personal style and home all reflect the same linearity, minimalism and playfulness that you find in our jewellery line. The simplicity and integrity of the design in turn emphasises the beauty and quality of the materials and craftsmanship.
FC: Who is your customer?
RDLC: Like our clientele, we have found that our jewellery defies age and gender. It is really about the special esprit of the wearer that defines it. We are lucky to have a fabulous diverse group wearing our collection including Kate Moss, Adwoa Aboah, Kristen McMenamy, Lily Allen, Leonardo DiCaprio…
FC: Talk us through the collection, and your signature pieces?
RDLC: One of our best selling pieces is a beautiful classic long 18k gold chain. The idea is that you collect and layer different pendants on it- be it your own family or childhood jewellery or new pendants, which we are always designing. The Smile face inspired us for a pendant because of its visual simplicity in design – it is a play on circles – yet it is playful and evocative and inspires emotion and conversation. It is a memento mori to live each day. Be happy.
FC: Tell us about the process?
RDLC: Our jewellery collection has never been market or season focused- it’s based on pieces that are timeless and have beautiful craftsmanship and materials- pieces that we want to wear now but also collect and layer.
FC: What is luxury to you?
RDLC: Luxury is about living with taste and style. Great style is about editing and all in the details. Accessories allow you to personalise, update and ultimately complete a look. As an accessory, fine jewellery provides you with intrinsically precious and timeless pieces that you cherish and collect and continue to enjoy past this season.
FC: Where can we buy?
RDLC: Matchesfashion, Moda Operandi, The Webster, Farfetch…
