Solaris 111 Sailing Yacht Makes An Impression In Monaco

The 111-foot-long Solaris 111 was one of the yachts I was eager to see in person at the 2021 Monaco Yacht show. And after spending some quality time aboard with Solaris Yachts owner Marc “Gio” Giorgetti, I can honestly say this sexy high-performance sailboat that was designed by Javier Soto Acebal, and built by Solaris Yachts in Italy, exceeded my expectations.

I know this is not a very technical analysis but…everything about the boat just felt… right. The hull has a modern shape that all Solaris sailing yachts have. They are efficient (i.e. fast) without sacrificing comfort or seakeeping. And the heavy bulb on the end of lifting fin-keel provides plenty of upwind performance while also making it easier to access shallower waters.

Down below, I loved the large main saloon that’s flooded with natural light. The continuous glass band under the coach roof and glass hatches as well as the companionway door are really well done.

But I think the owner’s suite, that’s located all the way aft (at the yacht’s maximum beam) could be the yacht interior’s star attraction. In fact, I’ve never seen such a clever use of space on a sailing yacht in this size range.

The aft-facing companionway doors angle upwards and double as skylights. When opened, the owner’s private cockpit becomes part of the suite making this a true private space with direct access to the sea. Light from the big companionway door also filters into the suite all the way to the entrance of the his and her separate bathrooms.

Too bad I couldn’t see how the boat sailed for myself because it was “trapped” in the show. I guess I’ll just have to go to Italy for my test sail next spring!

Stay tuned.
